In Gnostic Christianity there is no single, unified interpretation of the meaning of Christ’s crucifixion and resurrection. However, some key themes can be identified based on Gnostic texts and beliefs.

In the Gnostic text “The Gospel of Philip,” the crucifixion is seen as a symbolic act in which Christ descends into the material world and undergoes suffering in order to free human souls from their bondage to matter:

“He was hung upon a tree. He manifested the salvation of the world.” (Gospel of Philip 83:25-27)

This act of sacrifice is seen as a means of liberating human souls from the material world and restoring them to their true spiritual nature. According to the Gnostic text “The Apocryphon of John,” Christ’s crucifixion is part of a larger cosmic drama in which divine sparks of light were scattered throughout the material world, and in which Christ’s sacrifice is a means of reuniting those sparks with their true home in the spiritual realm:

“He came and found them (the divine sparks) all fallen together in the chaos, and he saved them all, and brought them up to himself, so that they might be in the realms of light.” (Apocryphon of John, NHLE 1992: 101)

In this interpretation, the crucifixion is not seen as an act of atonement for human sin, but rather as a means of liberating human souls from their bondage to matter and reuniting them with the divine.

The resurrection, in turn, is seen as a symbol of the ultimate victory of the spirit over the material world. According to the Gnostic text “The Gospel of Mary,” the resurrection represents the triumph of the spiritual over the material, and the ultimate liberation of human souls from the cycle of birth, death, and rebirth:
“The Lord loved Mary more than all the disciples, and used to kiss her often on her mouth. The rest of the disciples were offended by it and expressed disapproval. They said to him, ‘Why do you love her more than all of us?’ The Savior answered and said to them, ‘Why do I not love you like her?’

When a blind man and one who sees are both together in darkness, they are no different from one another. When the light comes, then he who sees will see the light, and he who is blind will remain in darkness.” (Gospel of Mary 5:8-15)
In this interpretation, the resurrection represents the ultimate liberation of human souls from their blindness and ignorance, and their return to the light of the divine.

The crucifixion and resurrection are seen as powerful symbols of descent, sacrifice, liberation, and reunion with the divine, and are central to the Gnostic Christian understanding of the human spiritual journey.

I wouldn’t say that he came to set us free from matter but rather to unite spirit and matter together. I’ve never got much into the New Testament or the books revolving around Christ’s life story because they all have different details and don’t make perfect sense. The one book of Christ that I have been able to make perfect sense of is Revelations. It states that we are to become godlike and that the pleasures of the world are here for us to enjoy. This is the uniting of God/spirit and the world/flesh.

I understand it well as I have personally been enduring the trials and tribulations and God has brought a great deal of understanding to me of this book in particular as well as some from the old testament, also where there is no confusion and contradicting stories. Just one story for each situation. Jesus represents the evil and chaos we must go through in uniting spirit with flesh. In order to unite two things into one there must be vulnerability and a break in the 2 barriers creating an opening for them to be able to merge together.

Kind of like welding. Both pieces of metal must melt and lose the structure in order to become one and fuse together into one new structure. This is why at the end of Revelations it says a New World will be formed.

As far as Christ and Mary, I can not say for certain as there is no solid evidence of the matter, but I personally believe they would have had a child together. This would make sense in uniting spirit and flesh. Christ was fully in spirit and Mary was entirely in the flesh serving the spirit and is why these things about her and Christ remained in the dark throughout the ages until now in a time when women are being liberated and finding their own Light and power of God.

Women are to become like men as Men are becoming like gods. We have re-entered into the same Era where God flooded the world. It says in Enoch that women became so comely(atrractive) that the angels come down from heaven and took wife’s for themselves. Also says that the earth was ruled by gods. We are becoming godlike again and this time God will not destroy us no we are destroyed it will be from our own doings. God has blessed us with all the knowledge and wisdom needed to govern and guide ourselves into a healthy world. It is up to us to make sure that happens
