Under the simulation theory, what we consider “reality” could merely be one layer of potentially countless simulations. Imagine a set of Russian dolls, where each doll represents a simulation within a simulation. Our current reality would be one of these dolls, possibly not the smallest and certainly not the largest. One of the biggest questions surrounding the simulation theory is the nature of consciousness. Are we sentient beings experiencing a simulated reality? Or are we part of the simulation itself, with our sense of consciousness merely another coded feature?
The answer to this question has huge implications for our understanding of self, existence, and, reality. Spiritual and religious traditions posit that our current reality is an illusion or a temporary state, and there’s a higher, truer reality beyond it ie enlightenment, nirvana, heaven, etc. The simulation theory sort of mirrors these beliefs, suggesting that our understanding of reality is limited and that there’s a broader existence beyond our comprehension. If we’re in a simulation, “reality” becomes a deeply multi-dimensional concept, where our current existence is just one facet of a much grander cosmic structure.
If we’re not in a simulation, then we could be in a multi-dimensional realm of existence, where every choice we make splits into infinite alternate realities. Or, perhaps our consciousness is part of a vast interconnected cosmic web, with each individual serving as a node. Think of it like a grand cosmic play, where each of us has our own role, but the script is constantly evolving based on our choices. And who knows, maybe our ‘reality’ is just one layer in a stack of countless other realities. Like layers of an onion, but every layer is a different frequency or vibration of existence. This might sound wild, but isn’t anything possible?
