BODY SOUL SPIRIT
Someone asked me about my perspective on the difference between body, soul and spirit. The following are my thoughts.
The Soul is the Ruach that was breathed into Adam to make him a living being. When the soul leaves the body then you’re dead. The soul is the part of you that animates the body. You can say it is the mover of the body. While the body dies, the soul does not die but is simply disconnected from the body at death because the body would no longer be fit enough to house it. In Hinduism, the soul is called Atman, the individual self.
The Spirit is your divine Self. It is beyond time and space. God is said to be spirit. Your spirit is what connects you to God who is Spirit. Esoteric texts hint that the spirit has been set as a prize for those souls who manage to turn within and purify themselves through Wisdom and Virtue. When a person is said to be enlightened, then they have reunited with their Spirit giving them power to do miracles and see the future. The Spirit is called Brahman, the divine self. Even the bible testifies that Spirit is not something we are born with if one considers being born again in spirit and how the spirit fell upon the disciples on pentecost as well as how Jesus received the spirit on his baptism.
When a person dies, the soul has left the body, when a person becomes enlightened, they have reunited with Spirit. While there are many souls, there is only one Spirit which unites us all. It is believed by mystics that the goal of life is to unite your Atman to Brahman, your Soul to Spirit.
