In my personal life, the last several years have felt like one brutal event after another, and the same has been true for us nationally. A few things have kept my life from going off the rails and helped me stay mostly sane and full of hope:

  1. Nature
  2. Scripture
  3. Community

Neuroscience has shown that walking in nature decreases anxiety and boosts empathy and creativity. Doomscrolling won’t help any of us; it will just drive us over the edge. Scripture is not from the left or the right—it is from above, and it can speak to all of us. Followers of Jesus have survived every catastrophe by clinging to it. Many are feeling despair today in my city, but Jesus’s kingdom cannot be shaken.

Finally, if by chance you are reading this and celebrating this evening, I’d humbly ask you to take a walk—and bring your Bible, too. Scripture warns us not to be haughty and reminds us that God hates division. We need people who hold community together, not tear it apart.
